What to expect during your initial visit?

Your initial consultation is COMPLIMENTARY and is an important opportunity for us to get to know you and what you want to accomplish. We schedule it when we can give you uninterrupted time. This way, you get not only the best clinical result; you'll also be pleased with your smile.

The orthodontic exam is comfortable and completely painless. Following the exam, we'll make a recommendation based on your specific situation. We will explain how long treatment should take and the cost and payment options.

Diagnosis

Excellence in orthodontics is based on thorough and accurate diagnosis. To facilitate diagnosis, the following pre-treatment records are taken:

- Medical / dental history
- Clinical examination
- Study models
- Facial photographs
- Intraoral photographs
- Lateral cephalometric radiograph
- Complete intraoral or panoramic radiographs
- Complete treatment plan with objectives
- Other diagnostic material/data may be necessary

When to have your initial exam?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation at age seven. With early diagnosis, an orthodontist can guide facial growth, help control harmful habits, and coordinate tooth eruption to help prevent more serious problems from developing. This often results in saving both time and money.   The average age for full braces is 12 years old—usually a little earlier for girls and later for boys.

One of the myths about braces is that they are only for children. This is not true since 30% of our patients are adults. The number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment is increasing each year. They are especially excited with their new smiles since they have tolerated crooked teeth for so long. Adults realize the value of improved dental health as well as the increased self-esteem derived from improving their appearance. At Sprowls Orthodontic Center, we have private treatment rooms for the comfort and privacy of our adult patients.

Will I need teeth extracted?

Sprowls Orthodontics incorporates the newest technology and mechanics, allowing us to reduce the number of cases needing extraction of permanent teeth. However, each patient is unique and their malocclusion may necessitate the removal of permanent teeth. Each case is evaluated so that the most stable and aesthetic result can be achieved through orthodontic care.

Cooperation

Sometimes, the most difficult challenge in treatment is patient cooperation. Sprowls Orthodontics strives for ideal orthodontic finishes. In order to achieve this goal, patients are expected to cooperate by following instructions, keeping their teeth clean, being on time, not missing appointments, and caring for their appliances properly. Excellent oral hygiene is an extremely important factor in the orthodontic treatment process. Each patient will be instructed on special brushing and flossing techniques and informed of the need for daily use of a fluoride rinse.

Typical treatment options include:

*INTERCEPTIVE TREATMENT – Holding arches/ space maintainers
Space maintenance is utilized to reduce the need for extraction of permanent teeth.

*PHASE I BRACES

2x4 Appliance – Used in children to retract or align the anterior teeth prior to full braces in cases where esthetics or function is compromised.

*HABIT MODIFICATION

Habits such as thumb sucking; tongue thrusting, lip biting, and mouth breathing are treated as early as possible to prevent long term complications.

The Tongue Crib is an appliance used for thumb sucking and/or tongue thrusting.

*CROSSBITE CORRECTION/EXPANSION

A Rapid Palatal Expander is used
to expand the upper jaw

*FULL TREATMENT/PHASE II

Traditional Metal Braces

Esthetic Ceramic Brackets

Invisalign is a new treatment option that utilizes clear plastic "aligners" to move the teeth.  Dr. Sprowls will be able to tell you whether or not you are a candidate for Invisalign.

*RETENTION – Indefinite retention is recommended for all patients due to the fact that teeth continue to shift with age. Retention is an important phase in treatment and patients will be closely monitored and evaluated for approximately two years after appliances are removed.
