What To Do In Case Of Emergency

If you experience a broken or loose appliance, we recommend you call our office as soon as possible so we can find a time to see you and fix the issue appropriately. Even if you already have an appointment scheduled with us for a regular check-up, tightening, or any other reason, we ask that you give us a call immediately to notify us if you are need of an appliance repair as well. Please do not come directly to our office as we will need to create a time slot so we can give you our full, undivided attention.

Some common emergency issues we see include loose brackets or bands, wire irritations, lost separators, and discomfort with your orthodontic treatment. Please read more below to learn how to react to and treat these common problems.

Loose Brackets or Bands

If you notice that one of your brackets or wires is loose or broken, please call our office immediately as the bracket or wire may need to be re-fitted as soon as possible. If you experience a loose or broken bracket, band, or wire, after our office has closed or on the weekends, you may need to cut the wire or slide a bracket off of a wire on your own to lessen your discomfort until you are able to be seen by Dr. Sprowls. To do so, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed thoroughly and sterilized in alcohol. If this happens, please call our office the next business day so that we may treat your issue properly.

Wire Irritations

If you find that a wire is poking or scraping on the inside of your mouth, it can often be resolved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If you are not able to move the wire, try covering the sharp part with a small piece of wax. If you are experiencing pain or major discomfort from the wire, you can cut it on your own with sterilized nail clippers. If you are not able to resolve the wire irritation on your own, please call our office to schedule an appointment and we will be able to fix it for you.

Lost Separators

We understand that things get lost. In fact, many patients lose a separator during their treatment. If this happens, do not worry about losing it, but please call our office to find out if it needs to be replaced.

Discomfort With Orthodontic Treatment

It is often common to experience some discomfort throughout your orthodontic treatment. This is especially true in the first few weeks when your braces are first put on, or when routine adjustments and tightening are made. To reduce soreness, try applying a warm wash cloth or heating bad to the area. Additionally, you may take acetaminophen, or any other non-aspirin pain relievers, as you adjust to your new braces.
