The "Temporomandibular Joint", more commonly known as the "jaw joint", works to allow your jaw the basic opening and closing movements, such as chewing and talking. To determine if treatment is needed, we perform a TMJ exam that can evaluate the joint tissue in the "hinge" of the jaw. Possible issues that we look for include swelling, damaged joint issue, the tissue that cushions the jaw bones during the opening and closing movement of the mount, and deterioration of the joint tissue.

Serious cases of TMJ

For more serious cases of TMJ, we may suggest alternate treatments, such as using a mouth guard to protect against teeth grinding. In most cases, we will recommend the use of orthodontic appliances or retainers to ease some of your discomfort or redirect the positioning of the TMJ joint. For the most serve TMJ issues, we may consider more invasive procedures.
